James Mason's music-y bloggy thing

About: Hey, I'm James, and this is where I'm going to be putting anything to do with me and music for the time being. It'll mostly be just mucking about with family and mates at the moment, but I want to get back into writing stuff soon so hopefully I'll occasionally be able to drop some of that on here too. We'll see.

My sister’s been up for the last couple of days, and while the missus is out at work and before B heads off Londonwards we had a bash at a Kodaline song.

Bit sloppy, with plenty of yawning and face-pulling to make up for the lack of overall finesse, but we didn’t have much time if we wanted to watch some Thundercats before her train. Priorities.

So my sister and I just spent the best part of 5 hours fighting with Cubase (I cannot into computer) but then this happened.

She’s a bit of a Bon Iver fan, and we’ve had a crack at it before with just a guitar, a camera and a Bethan, but this time we used some of that fancy computer jiggerypokery so that she could record harmonies, which was great fun.

The song is Blood Bank, by Bon Iver.

I played guitar, Bethan sung, and we worked out the harmonies for the end between us.

Bon Iver - Blood Bank (Blood Bank, 2009)

Just playing this track on an acoustic probably loses a fair bit compared to the original, but it was still alright up until the point I opened my mouth. There should be a general embargo on me attempting to sing, ever.

Vocals - Bethan Mason (youtube)

Guitar - Me

Me and B having a go at Benjamin Francis Leftwich - Pictures (Last Smoke Before the Snowstorm, 2011). We did this the other night - I’ve been back at my folks’ for a couple of nights and we’ve had a bash at a new song each night. It’s a pretty good fun way to relax after a day of almost-revising.

Singing - Bethan Mason (youtube)

Guitar - me

Kings of Leon - Sex on Fire (Only By The Night, 2008)

A cover from an old ACM band (the music college I went to for a year between sixth form and university). It was pretty good fun playing with these guys.

Lead Vocals - Hollie Elizabeth (now in We Caught The Castle)

Lead Guitar - Al Wreaves

Rhythm Guitar - Me

Bass - Mica Halliday

Drums - Zak Watson (now in We Caught The Castle)

This kind of sucks, but the original theme is awesome, and I wanted to give it a bash. You can kind of tell I didn’t really know what I was doing though - a bunch of presets, and the glitching on the drums in the last section was all from a VST instead of doing anything myself. Kind of a catalogue of bodges and cheats.

Another old muckabout in Fruity. Matisyahu released the stems for a remix competition on Indaba - as with a lot of other stuff I did, looking back this isn’t that great, but it was good fun anyway.

This never got finished - the original intent was to try and sort out some vocals for it. I didn’t really push that enough, though, and then I lost everything in a computer crash.

Looking back, I’m not sure I’d do everything the same, but I’ve always been a fan of 7/8 and I quite liked the skittering little drums.

Synergy - Crazy for You (Scunge remix)

My remix under the Scunge tag. Just attempting to be as chilled as can be, and work on my production skills a little and my attention to detail an ting. I like to think you can tell, at least compared to some of the other stuff on that Soundcloud.

Jose Vanders - Faces Going Places

Vocals - Bethan Mason (youtube)

Piano - Me

Those claps at the beginning. They took me so long to get used to. And Jose does them and sings at the same time. That’s multi-tasking.
